The Amazon Rainforest is a tropical rainforest spanning many South American countries. One of those South American countries is Brazil. It’s located in the drainage basin of the Amazon River which is where Amazon Rainforest drains downward into Amazon River. The rainforest has an area of 2,300,000 square miles, consisting of 40% of Brazil’s total area. In addition, its location is highly populated with geographical sights, being bordered by the Guiana Highlands up north, the Andes Mountains to the west, the Brazilian central plateau down south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The climate in the Amazon Rainforest is incredibly hot and humid with a high rainfall. The Amazon rainforest is also one of the most biodiverse places in the world since it’s home to millions of species of bugs, birds, and plants. Some examples of tree species are myrtle, laurel, palm, acacia, rosewood, Brazil nut, and rubber. Some examples of animals are jaguars, manatees, tapirs, red deer, capybaras many types of rodents, and types of monkeys. Brazil is home to about 60% of the Amazon basin. However, as Brazil’s population started growing more rapidly in the 20th century people started intruding on the forest land for personal use. In 1970 the forest spanned 1,583,000 square miles but eventually shrunk to only 1,283,000 square miles in 2016. However, the pace of forest loss has gone from 0.4 percent in the 1980s to 0.1–0.2 recently. Another issue in the Amazon rainforest is the threat of fire. 75,000 fires were recorded in the Brazilian Amazon in the first half of 2019 (an increase of 85 percent since 2018). Given this information, it is clear that the future of the Amazon rainforest is unclear and in danger.
